FULL MOON RITUALS
We talk a lot about mystical things around us. We talk about spiritual vibes, planetary combinations, what certain tarot cards mean, and how the cosmos play out in your life as a whole.
Every 28-30 days the moon travels closest to the earth and showers us with light and her strong ‘yang’ energy. It is a great time to pause and check in with yourself, purge anything that doesn’t serve you, let go, and make space for the new.
Personally, I love following the natural rhythms of the universe and exploring my psyche and subconscious by understanding how the planetary flow can sync up with my personal being. It’s one way I make sense of this big wide world.
Below I’ve outlined a few of my full moon rituals - these are beautiful ways to simply disconnect from the busy life style and tune back into nature, the universe, and YOU.
Before you begin remember this: enter into rituals with a clear mind and an open heart. If you feel negative thoughts arising, simply ask your mind to ground back into the present moment and to wash away worry, focusing only on the exact moment at hand.
Full Moon Rituals – What to do during a Full Moon? Here are some full moon rituals to harness this beautiful new energy into your life.
Space Cleansing RitualTools: New Bedcovers, Essential Oils, Beautiful Flowers
What to do: The full moon is the high point of the lunar cycle when the moon is closest to the earth and its cleansing energy can be felt full beam! Take an hour out of your day to put clean, fresh bedsheets on your bed, declutter your space, water your house plants, wipe surfaces clean, open the windows and let fresh air in, spritz the room with cleansing essential oils, decorate some beautiful flowers and then burn some incense or sage in a smudging ceremony … see below!
Full Moon Smudging CeremonyTools: White Sage/ Incense or Herbs like Rosemary, Juniper, & Lavender
What to do: This is one of my favorite full moon rituals. Smudging is an ancient cleansing ceremony and spiritual ritual practiced by indigenous Native Americans. Cleanse negative energy from home. It involves burning sacred herbs. When burned, incense and herbs emit a smoke known to release toxic, stagnant energies and walking the smoke to all corners of your home to purify the air.
A full moon night is a perfect time to ceremoniously clear away bad vibes lingering around your home, your electronic devices, or around you. Sage bundles are most commonly used for their purifying qualities.
To start, light a candle and set an intention. As you do so, set your lunar cycle intention and release anything that’s not serving you. Choose a mantra, like: “I release the thoughts that no longer serve me from reaching my highest potential - I call in abundance and positivity for this new month ahead.”
Light your sage or incense you have, and blow it out so just the smoke billows. Waft the smoke around yourself, and then move to each room of your home, allowing the smoke to move through your space. With both hands, move the smoke towards your heart, over your head, and down the front and back of your body to cleanse yourself. Then walk the smoke around your house to all corners, including cupboards, wardrobes, and bottom and top corners of rooms. Be sure to waft the smoke into each corner of your rooms and around your electronic devices. Follow your intuition, wafting the smoke wherever you feel guided. Once you’ve wafted the smoke throughout your home, open a window or a door to allow the old energy out, and new energy in. Open a window to the moonlight to allow it to bath your home in fresh moon energy. Never extinguish the lit embers with water.
Take a Moonbeam Bath or an Actual Bath RitualTools: Himalayan Salt, Candles, Crystals, Sage, Essential or Relaxing Oils
What to do: If you can get outside and bathe in the moonlight in either the ocean or freshwater, this is a wonderful way to connect yourself with nature and the energy of the full moon. If bathing outside doesn’t sound like your jam, run yourself a nice hot bath with a good amount of pink Himalayan Salts, light some candles, surround yourself with healing crystals, burn some sage, or essential oils and drop a few of your favorite essential oils into the hot running water. I love sandalwood essential oil or relaxing lavender oils in the bath.
Full Moon Water Ritual
Tools: Jar with a Lid, Water
What to do: Take your container, fill it with filtered water or water from your tap and simply place it outside in the direct line of the moonlight overnight. As you place the water outside, spend a few minutes considering your intentions for the lunar cycle ahead - the lunar cycle is the month to come. In the morning collect the jar and use it however you wish! Here are a few ideas of what you can do with it:
drink it - taking a sip or two every day, reminding yourself of your intentions and the power of the moon.
bathe your crystals in it - your crystals can absorb all types of energy, bathing them in your moon water will give them a refresh and positive vibes.
Full Moon Wishes Manifestation Ritual
Tools: Paper, Pencil, Box or Jar, Candles
What to do: List your manifestations. Let the spirit of the evening move you! This one is simple and so beautiful. The full moon with its intense energy is a great time to manifest or make a wish. Roll out your yoga mat outside and start by lighting a candle and some incense, focus on getting present, and letting go of everything spinning through your mind.
Spend a few moments thinking about what you want to release, and what you want to call in.
Take the paper and one by one jot down the things you’d like to show up into your life over the next month Close your eyes and center yourself with your breath. Imagine your wish, goal or manifestation coming true. How do you feel? How does your body feel thinking of this wish? Take a pencil and write on some paper “I manifest…” and then write your wish, goal or whatever it is that you want to manifest. Sit with the words on the paper in meditation for as short or as long as you wish.
Place the wish list someplace special: in a pretty box or roll up the page and place it in a jar - and then set it outside to soak up the moonlight.
In the morning bring the wishes back inside and place it somewhere you will see it daily. I have a little Crystal Altar in my lobby where I keep mine, but something as simple as placing it on your nightstand works just as well. Each evening before you go to sleep, take a look at your list and reflect.
Write a release letter & then burn it
Now is the best time to release and let go. No ritual is stronger than writing down your deepest inner thoughts and then releasing that energy by watching it go up in flames. If you are stuck with what to release or write, you could write include a letter to yourself about the things you are worried about or want to rid yourself of (habits, negative thoughts etc), or write a letter to someone whose energy or friendship no longer serves you and you want to let them go.
Meditate for Gratitude
Take advantage of the energy that the full moon offers and take time in meditation for introspection. Full Moon is a time when emotions come to the surface, so take note of what thoughts keep appearing and use your breath to promote feelings of calm and stillness. Count your blessings. Let go of any unresolved feelings by thinking about who and what you are grateful for. Fill yourself up with gratitude by making a list of everything that comes to mind. Then re-read this list. Having a tough time finding something to be grateful for? Just focus on one thing that you may take for granted and explore that from all angles. You’ll be surprised how much happiness writing down what you are grateful for will bring you.
Charge Your Crystals
The light of the full moon is the best time to re-charge your crystals. Wash your crystals first under running water and then place them outside in the moonlight to purify them and strengthen their individual energy. The light of the full moon is strong for around three days so leave them out for longer if you feel called to do so. Crystals hold the energy of people and places, electronics etc. It is important to regularly cleanse your crystals, especially the crystals you wear on your body. Don’t forget those!
So tonight, I will be bathing under the full moon in the ocean on my surfboard. I’ll be rolling out my yoga mat for moon bath after smudging my home with Sage, and burning letters and energies that no longer serve me – Will you join?
